Girls Quest has been providing enrichment programs promoting literacy, teamwork, leadership, and ecological awareness to disadvantaged girls for 70 years. Girls Quest?s leadership approached Cause Effective to find ways to maximize the varied skills of 17 board members and engage them more deeply. Over an 18-month period, we worked with the Girls Quest board and staff leadership to invigorate board operations. We organized two retreats to build connections between board members and address the governance issues in a focused environment. At each retreat we identified strategic priorities and the steps needed to reach them. Through this process, Girls Quest revised its by-laws, instituted rotation policies, analyzed the board skill set, defined the role of the board as well as individual members, and brought in new board members who brought needed skills. As a result of our work together, Girls Quest has a more effective board, with fully functioning committees better positioned to make critical decisions.
