Samiya Bashir, Executive Director, Lambda Literary
Samiya Bashir is a writer, performer, librettist, and multi-media poetry maker. Author of three poetry collections, most recently the Oregon Book Award-winning Field Theories. Her honors include the Rome Prize, Pushcart Prize, Oregon’s Arts & Culture Council Individual Artist Fellowship, Hopwood Poetry Awards, and fellowships from MacDowell and the Virginia Center of Creative Arts. A long-time advocate, and community-builder, Bashir worked as a non-profit communications professional for over a decade prior to transitioning into academia, where she most recently served as an Associate Professor at Reed College. Having recently returned to nonprofit leadership, Bashir currently serves as Executive Director of Lambda Literary, the nationwide advocacy organization for LGBTQIA+ literary arts. Bashir is currently completing a short-form opera with the Saint Louis Opera Theatre. She lives in Harlem.
